Angle Parking, Perpendicular Parking And Parallel Parking: Which Should You Do And When?

Some disabled drivers face a wide range of challenges that they must overcome when they are diagnosed with a disability. This is especially true for people who are learning how to park with a disability. Because disabilities like rheumatoid arthritis may restrict the disabled person’s range of motion, they may need to learn how to park safely with these limitations.

Most of all, when a disabled person is learning how to park with their disabilities, they need to master 3 of the most common types of parking techniques. Three of the most common types of parking are listed below.

  • Angle parking
  • Perpendicular parking
  • Parallel parking

Each of these types of parking techniques are considered to be very critical maneuvers. Therefore, it is very important that drivers with disabilities understand when they should be used, and how to park safely in any situation. For instance, when a person with a disability learns how to perform perpendicular parking and angle parking techniques properly, these types of skills normally become a big part of a disabled person’s useful resources and their driving tool kit.

Guide for Angle Parking, Perpendicular Parking or Parallel Parking

Needless to say, it is not uncommon for people with disabilities to ask a lot of questions about how to go about learning these skills and how they can be mastered. For instance, here are some of the most common questions asked about parking with a disability and how to master each.

  • How does a disabled person learn how to perform each type of parking technique?
  • What steps does a driver take to perform perpendicular parking correctly?
  • How does a disabled driver park in angled parking spaces?
  • Which types of parking types of parking techniques are more difficult than others?
  • Is parallel parking difficult to perform for a person with a disability?
  • When should each of the 3 types of parking techniques (i.e. Angle parking, Perpendicular parking
  • and Parallel parking) be used and when?

Angle Parking, Perpendicular Parking, And Parallel Parking

As mentioned earlier, perpendicular and angle parking and parallel parking are 3 of the most common types of parking that many drivers use today. Even though most drivers may have their favorite type of parking technique that they prefer to perform more than the others, it is still important for every disabled driver to know how to master them all. This is because, at some point in time, they may have a need to park in a small parking space without damaging other vehicles around it.

Double Parking (Is Usually Illegal)

Even though double parking is not on the list of the most common types of parking, you need to learn as much as you can about this fourth type of parking. This is primarily because double parking is usually illegal in most cases and situations. Therefore, it is the exception to the rule in many places and situations. For example, double parking is considered to be illegal when you are parking in a parking lot or somewhere on a side street. In either case, since double parking can block access to another driver’s vehicle, this is not only highly discouraged but illegal, too.

On the other hand, double parking can be very beneficial and legal in certain types of situations. For instance, double parking may not be illegal for a number of different reasons, particularly if you are a valet that is responsible for driving the vehicles of others. In these situations, the valet is not only parking cars for their special guests, but also managing the flow of the traffic, and the parking spaces within a private parking lot or a public parking lot that has limited parking spaces.

Which Type Of Parking Is Best Suited For Which Situation?

When you drive into any parking lot, you are usually looking for a parking space that you can drive into quickly. And as you begin to survey the parking lot for the best places to park, you may see parking spaces that require you to perform one or more of the techniques that you have recently learned.

In fact if you have just learned how to use all of your driving skills, you can look at a parking space to determine which parking technique is best suited for that particular situation. For instance, if you are trying to park in a parking lot that does not have enough space for more vehicles, you may be using your skills to park perpendicularly. Or, if you are trying to park in a space that is on the streets, you may use your skills to park parallel instead of using your angle or perpendicular parking skills. Whatever the case or situation, double parking is not the most commonly used. Yet, it can be used by valets who are managing tight spots with limited parking spaces for the disabled.

What Is Angle Parking?

Angle parking is one of the easiest types of parking types to learn. This is because each vehicle is normally aligned perfectly with the direction of other vehicles on the street or in a parking lot.

How Do You Park In An Angled Parking Space?

The steps for parking in an angled parking space is also relatively simple for any driver to do. Here are the steps that you should follow.

  • After signaling to other drivers your intent, you need to position your vehicle a few feet away from the angled space.
  • Look at your parking space to locate its middle position and then move slowly into the space.
  • Stop when your vehicle approximately 6 inches from the end of your parking space.

What Is Perpendicular Parking?

In perpendicular parking, these vehicles are parked perpendicular to an aisle or a curb. This type of parking is normally used in garages and parking lots to maximize space.

What Are The Steps For Perpendicular Parking?

The steps for perpendicular parking are listed below, and they are relatively simple for most drivers to follow.

  • After signaling to other drivers your intent, you need to position your vehicle a couple of feet from the perpendicular parking space.
  • Drive forward slowly, while checking your side mirrors.
  • Once the first line of the space is visible to you, you should start steering the vehicle toward the center of the parking space
  • Stop when your vehicle is approximately 6 inches from the end of your parking space

What Is Parallel Parking?

Parallel parking can be described as 2 or more vehicles facing the same direction.

Is Parallel Parking Hard?

Parallel parking is also considered to be one of the most difficult types of parking for people to do. And unfortunately, parallel parking is essential in a number of public places, specifically when people are parking on the curb.

What Are The Steps For Parallel Parking?

  • Before attempting, check to see if the space is large enough to fit your vehicle
  • After signaling your intent to other drivers, position your vehicle alongside the vehicle that is in front of that particular parking space, and then align your vehicle with its back bumper.
  • Turn your steering wheel very sharply to the right and then straighten the wheel
  • Adjust your vehicle’s position as necessary
