Young people with disabilities are persistently under-employed and experience concerning rates of discrimination and ableism in looking for work and within the workplace. Focusing on youth is salient because rates of ableism are often higher among younger ages compared to older. This presentation discusses the results of a systematic review on the experiences and impact of workplace discrimination and ableism among youth and young adults with disabilities.
Dr. Sally Lindsay
Dr. Sally Lindsay is a Senior Scientist at Bloorview Research Institute, Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital and an Associate Professor in the Departments of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy, University of Toronto. Her PhD is in the Sociology of Work and Health. Her research focuses on the social inclusion and participation of children and youth with disabilities, especially as they transition to adulthood and into the workplace. She has 140 publications, 150 invited presentations and has been awarded 20 peer-reviewed grants totalling over $6.5 million as a principal investigator from SSHRC, CIHR among others. She was recently elected into the College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists of the Royal Society of Canada. She recently held an Early Researcher Award from the Ontario Ministry of Research and Innovation for her work on "Improving the inclusion and participation of people with disabilities in the labour force". Dr. Lindsay leads the TRAIL (Transitions And Inclusive environments) Lab at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital.
Shaelynn Hsu
Shaelynn Hsu is currently working towards her Honours BSc in the Biomedical Sciences program at York University. She hopes to combine her passion for working with youth and adults with disabilities and interest in research to develop inclusive strategies and facilitate independence as a Ward Research Summer Student at the Bloorview Research Institute. She is also currently working as a Life Skills Assistant in the VolunteerABLE program at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital.
