Focus of the session
To learn about the key drivers for, and practical elements of, a new approach to the physical healthcare of individuals with dementia at risk of secondary health complications as a result of limited mobility.
Why?
Individuals with dementia are at risk of developing high muscle tone and becoming stuck in limited lying positions. This has a profound impact on their physical health but also their care needs.
Jo will support participants to understand an explanatory model based on the non- verbal cues given by these individuals to indicate that their body perception is in decline, this decline is due to the sensomotor disintegration that the brain of the person with dementia is confronted with.
How?
Jo will support participants to understand how care-givers can provide specific sensory stimuli to the three most important teachers primary area of the brain, namely the tactile, proprioceptive and vestibular systems. These stimuli support the individual in need of additional feedback according to the principles of sensomotor integration therapy.
