Inspired by the experiences of the peer network Disability Elders of All Ages, JFA Purple Orange presents 20 disability event workshops for Support Workers, carers and anyone interested in the support sector. Broadly titled as "What I Wish I Knew When I Was a Support Worker", these workshops have been crafted with input from people who receive support, those who provide it, and JFA Purple Orange's decades of experience.
Before we can dive into what good support looks like, we first need to understand the outdated traditions and expectations that we are working against. What is the legacy of institutionalisation? Why is so much of our communities still inaccessible? Knowing these histories will help us recognise barriers and ableism when we see it, in our communities, our workplaces and ourselves.
Hosted by Ellen Fraser-Barbour, a Policy and Research Leader at JFA Purple Orange. Ellen identifies as disabled and does work around preventing and addressing harm and discrimination against people with disability. Ellen is currently doing a PhD about experiences of people residing shared disability accommodation in relation to safety, belonging & agency.

20 workshops are planned from May 2022 to November 2023. Presenters will include people with lived experience of disability and support, along with academics and sector leaders. Attendees from across Australia are welcome to join one or all of the handicap event workshops.
