Neurodiversity & Invisible Disabilities in the Workplace Support Group

Neurodistinct and invisibly disabled employees: ditch the feeling of being completely alone at work and join a supportive group who gets you

By The Working Well

About this disability events

DOES ANY OF THIS SOUND LIKE YOU?

Are you lonely at work and feel like no one truly understands what you’re going through?

Are you frustrated that, sometimes, it feels like your supervisor or coworkers don’t seem to understand you, yet you’re not comfortable to say anything?

Have you been wondering how you can advocate for yourself and your peers without feeling like you're stepping out of line?

Do you feel that there’s a disconnect somewhere in your team, causing tension, and that you’re not all on the same page?

Do you feel overwhelmed by your to-do list, and find yourself resentful about tasks and other nuances of the day even when you’re not at work?

IMAGINE…

Being part of a supportive community of other people who really “get” you, feeling validated and hopeful that you can inspire change in your workplace together.

Fostering inclusive channels of communication with your team that allow you each to feel safe to speak up and share your perspective, claiming ownership of your unique experiences and contribution to the team.

Gracefully advocating for yourself and your team, so that everyone feels seen, understood, and connected.

Celebrating the inclusion of people with different viewpoints, ways of thinking, skill sets, and abilities, bringing your team together as a united group.

Having skills to center and ground yourself, releasing stress and increasing productivity. Imagine finishing the day feeling valued and accomplished, with energy left over to enjoy life outside of work.

INTRODUCING HIDDEN DIFFERENCES IN THE WORKPLACE SUPPORT GROUP

This handicap events is for employees with hidden differences who are ready to be a part of a community who “gets” it, to learn self-advocacy skills, and to feel confident bringing their full selves to work.

THIS IS A GOOD FIT FOR YOU IF…

You identify as neurodistinct/neurodivergent, invisibly disabled, or chronically ill. Diagnosis isn’t necessary (we know how difficult they can be!)

You work in a mission-driven organization, but don’t feel the connection between the mission and your team culture.

You can commit to attending the support group on a regular basis, so you build strong connections with peers who are going through similar experiences.

You understand the importance of respecting yourself, the group, and confidentiality of group members.

You’re committed to challenging yourself to change the way you communicate at work, while being kind to yourself in the process.

Frequently asked questions

I am a stay-at-home mom and my kid is disabled/neurodistinct/chronically ill. Is this for me?

No. While I FULLY agree that being a stay-at-home mom is more than a full-time job, this is not the type of support for you. We focus on managing relationships with coworkers, which wouldn’t be applicable to you. I encourage you to find a group specific to parents.

I am in between jobs and want to prepare for my next job. Is this for me?

No. This group will not focus on interview skills and is specifically designed to support people who are currently part of a work team. I encourage you to visit chronicallycapable.org, ndcc.simplyhire.com, or a local recruiter that helps people with your condition develop skills for employment.

I am not currently working, but I could really use support in managing my time. Is this for me?

No. While I absolutely would love to support you, we’ll be focusing on time and energy management as it relates specifically to the workplace. I encourage you to find another program that is better suited for you.

When/where are the support group sessions held?

The support group sessions are virtual, so that you can learn from and connect with people coming from different companies, industries, and time zones. Group sessions are the 4th Wednesday of every month from 12-1pm MST.

I am not available during the support group time. Is there another group outside of business hours?

At this time, there is not. We chose this time hoping that most people would be able to join over their lunch hour. If you would like an email template to request time off from your employer or to request another group time, please reach out to jenn@theworkingwell.us and I’d be happy to help.

I want to attend the group, but I'm worried someone from my company will find out.

In order to be a part of the group, all members must agree to keep identifying information in the group confidential. We hope that your attendance will give you the confidence you need to share your needs openly with your supervisor and peers at work, although we will never pressure you to do so.

I want to attend, but what if someone else from my company is in it? Won't that be awkward?

Actually, that would be an amazing opportunity to connect with your coworker on a new and unique human level. It would be great to get an ally in your company from attending this group together. Of course, if this makes you uncomfortable, please reach out and we’ll discuss alternative options.

Is this for managers or employees?

This group is for everyone. No matter what your title is, you’re a person, and all people need support. It would be great if you attended this group with people of all titles from your organization.
