Join Dr. Shobana Powell, DSW, LCSW & Cristian Eduardo, Survivor Leader as they discuss "covert pimp control", a term they coined through their work in the anti-trafficking field. They will share about the dynamics of pimp control in human trafficking, what it looks like when the coercive control is occuring from behind the scenes, and how to support survivors experiencing covert pimp control.

Objectives:

-build confidence in supporting survivors of covert pimp control

Dr. Shobana Powell, LCSW, DSW, is CEO and Founder of Shobana Powell Consulting, where she leads a team of national advocate and survivor experts who provide training and technical assistance on the intersectionality of human trafficking and systemic oppression. Dr. Powell is a bilingual Licensed Clinical Social Worker who has served as the Director of Micro Grants and the Director of the Survivor Leadership Institute at Sanctuary for Families and as the Director of Mental Health Court at Caddo Parish Juvenile Services. She has developed anti-trafficking multidisciplinary teams, coalitions, and programs, conducted court-ordered mental health and sex trafficking evaluations, and provided individual therapy for trauma and trafficking.
Her key areas of expertise include human trafficking, intersectionality, psychological coercion, survivor inclusion, and vicarious trauma and resilience.
Dr. Powell has Bachelor's degrees in Social Work and Spanish from New York University, a Master’s degree in Social Work from Columbia University and a Doctorate in Social Work and Social Innovation from the University of Southern California. Dr. Powell believes our work should be led by the communities we serve, and as such, through her doctoral research, she developed the Survivor Equity and Inclusion Framework, which is an organizational change approach to preventing re-exploitation of survivors and lived experience experts in the anti-trafficking movement.
Cristian Eduardo is a Lead Human Trafficking Consultant and Survivor with Shobana Powell Consulting, shaping national human trafficking trainings and policies. He also serves as a Survivor Consultant for ECPAT-USA, Center for Court Innovation, and USCRI. He is the Co-Founder of United Immigrants of New York (UIONY), a coalition of immigration advocates providing accessible education and resources to Spanish-speaking immigrants in New York.
Cristian Eduardo is on the Steering Committees for New Yorkers for the Equality Model and Louisiana for the Equality Model and has been instrumental in the development of human trafficking training and legislation across the US. Cristian Eduardo's inspiration for his social justice work is to give insight that victims always remain human beings.
