This 32-hour online training for ORAL interpreters is offered FREE of charge by the Virginia Healing Partnership (VRHP) with the support of the DSS Office of New Americans Refugee Services and DBHDS Office of Behavioral Health Wellness. This course is conducted via Zoom. It will provide participants with foundational knowledge and skills to render high quality interpreting when serving mental health, substance use, and developmental disability related cases in the clinical settings. COMPLETION OF AN INTERPRETER TRAINING COURSE AND PROOF OR LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY ARE REQUIRED TO ATTEND THIS TRAINING.
VIRGINIA SUMMER INSTITUTE FOR BEHAVIORAL HEALTH INTERPRETING
A. Training Schedule: 8 sessions, July 11-22, 2022, 1-5 PM. (Mon, Tue, Wed, and Thu)
YOU MUST COMPLETE ALL 8 SESSIONS (32-HOUS) AND PASS THE COMPETENCY TEST TO GET A CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION.
B. Who are qualified?
1. Oral interpreters who have previous formal interpreter training in other fields (medical, court, community, etc.). The training curriculum is NOT designed for non-oral interpreters.
2. Proficient in English and a foreign language with a score of 80% or better. Your application is conditional until appropriate copy of document is submitted to vrhp@dbhds.virginia.gov
Exemption to language proficiency test:
a) A degree in interpreting (associate, bachelors, or post graduate degree). Submit a copy of your diploma or equivalent document to: vrhp@dbhds.virginia.gov
b) Certified oral interpreters (CCHI, NBCMI, Court, etc.). Submit a copy of your certification to vrhp@dbhds.virginia.gov
c) Completed a BSI training provided by the Virginia Refugee Healing Partnership. No need to submit a copy of your certificate.
3. 18 years old and above.
4. Has completed high school or its equivalent in the United States.
5. Able to complete the 32-hour synchronous training.
6. Able to spend at least 30 minutes after-hour every session for independent learning (assignment, chapter reading, self-practice).
7. Intends to interpret in the EDUCATIONAL settings (IEP, 504 Plan, evaluation, conference/meetings related to mental health, substance use, or developmental disabilities, etc.).
C. Training Essentials
8. Has adequate skills to navigate Zoom platform and access training materials from Google Drive.
9. Has a computer or laptop with internet connection with audio-video capability. A functional video is a requirement to participate in this training because of group engagement activities.
10. Is able to attend the training completely at 4 hours per session for 8 sessions.
D. Deadline for Application
Deadline to apply online is June 27, 2022. All accepted applicants will be informed by Wednesday, June 29, 2022. Registration extended to July 7, 2022.
